Sport at Michaela

Michaela does not have on-site sports facilities. Instead, each year group goes to the local Powerleague all-surface pitches one afternoon each week from 2.30pm to 4.00pm.

Pupils wear their PE kits to school on sport days to maximise time spent on activities. 120 pupils travel with their teachers to Powerleague, a short distance away in the shadow of Wembley Stadium. To see 120 smartly turned out Michaela pupils travelling, as one, to and from Powerleague, is a sight to behold. Sport sessions at Michaela are delivered by specialist coaches brought in from outside the school. First-aid trained Michaela teachers are always present at these sessions as well as on the journey to and from the Powerleague.

Sport is outdoors all year round. We expect pupils to wear the full Michaela sports kit including jogging bottoms, the Michaela sport top, plain logo free base layers and in cold weather, the Michaela fleece. As the Powerleague facilities include all-weather pitches, sport can go ahead in all but the most extreme weather. We also sell a cagoule jacket ideal for wet conditions. Pupils are also encouraged to wear a plain black woollen hat and gloves in cold weather. Pupils must not wear studded football boots. Ordinary trainers, suitable for walking to and from the venue and then playing team sports on an all-weather pitch, are sufficient.

Our ladies and gentlemen’s football teams, the Stoics, play matches against other local schools. Only those pupils who exemplify the values of Michaela are selected for the school team. We place enormous importance upon true teamwork, self-control and personal integrity. Sport at Michaela is about working hard, being kind and supporting each other. The ‘S.T.O.I.C.S’ values are a fundamental part of our sport curriculum. These values are: Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Organisation, Integrity, (self) Control and Stamina. Each sport unit has one of the values attached to it as a focus area to place greater emphasis on the character development that sport can foster.

In the first term of each year, pupils focus on football. Throughout the year other sports options are offered. A range of key sporting areas are covered, these include invasion games such as handball and dodgeball; fielding/striking activities such as rounders, cricket and softball; as well as fitness/aerobic activities such as circuit training. All sports options are based at the Powerleague facility and must fit in with the facilities on offer. Pupils also have the options of playing basketball and table tennis at lunch.
